Oklahoma Senate Bill 1742 contains five pro-life provisions. This bill passed the Oklahoma State Senate on May 18 by a vote of 38-8. The Oklahoma State House of Representatives passed SB 1742 on April 26 by a vote of 84-5.
This is a critically important pro-life bill that contains the provisions of five abortion-related bills that passed the House earlier this session with overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill contains funding for alternatives to abortion, provides information about where a woman could get a free ultrasound, tells her about the pain a baby 20 weeks or older might feel during an abortion, provides for the consent of a parent before a minor's abortion, and makes it a crime to kill an unborn child in contexts other than legal abortion.
These five pro-life provisions were added to SB 1742 during the House consideration of the bill. SB 1742 then went back to the Senate, and the Senate voted to accept the House amendments. Since the bill passed the House and Senate with identical wording, the bill was sent to Governor Brad Henry on May 19. He now has the option of signing the bill into law, or vetoing the bill.
The most important thing that we as pro-life citizens in Oklahoma can now do is to contact Governor Brad Henry’s office ASAP, and politely ask him to sign the bill into law. The simple message to convey to the Governor is this, Please sign SB 1742, the pro-life bill, into law when it reaches your desk!
Governor's Oklahoma City Office phone: 405-521-2342 (calls are better than e-mails)
Governor's Tulsa office phone: 918-581-2801
Call Both!
To send e-mail, go to the website of the Governor: http://www.gov.ok.gov/contact.php Governor's FAX: 405-521-3353 (or 918-581-2835 in the Tulsa office).
Please pray that Governor Brad Henry will sign SB 1742 into law when it reaches his desk.
The pro-abortion forces in Oklahoma are expected to put an enormous amount of pressure on Governor Henry to veto the bill, so it is extremely important to contact the Governor ASAP in great numbers.
Thanks and God Bless!
