Bill Maher lets loose anti-Catholic attack

New York, May 25, 2007 / 05:52 am (CNA).- It sounds as though yet another radio show host has crossed the line. Bill Maher, a person known for his anti-Catholic views, treated his listeners to a tirade this last week that rivals Don Imus’ performance. He began with an attack on the late Rev. Jerry Falwell and then launched into a rant against Catholicism:

"And it's easy to start a religion! Watch, I do it for you: I had a vision last night! A vision! The Blessed Virgin Mary came to me--I don't know how she got past the guards--and she told me it's high time to take the high ground from the Seventh Day Adventists and give it to the 24-hour party people. And what happens in the confessional stays in the confessional. Gay men, don't say you're life partners, say you're a nunnery of two….”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded to Maher’s diatribe with a challenge to HBO’s board of directors.

"We are writing to the 14 members who sit on the board of directors of Time Warner (the parent company of HBO) asking each of them whether Maher's gratuitous and highly offensive attack on Jesus Christ merits the same punishment afforded Imus for his racist remark. Maher is a serial anti-Catholic bigot who mocked the Eucharist as recently as April 16.

Donohue also pointed out that, "Time Warner's Standards of Business Conduct--revised last month by the board of directors—includes the following principle: 'While our content may sometimes engender controversy, we want no one to question our character.' We know Maher lacks character. What the public needs to know is whether Time Warner's board has any."

All Saints Fun Day also a Wet Day

Here, climbing up into the dunk tank to be the target of my students' aim If you look closely, you will not see "Mr. A" sitting, but peeking out of the little window down below! I was dunked! I had a wonderful day at Fun Day. It was sad, however, seeing some of the parents for, what may be, the last time. The kids and parents have been incredible, I cannot imagine a better group for students and their parents.

Notice that I got back up for more and more! What a blast!

All Saints and Catholic Education

I am sorry to say that I did not receive a contract for next year so that the things that I was hoping to have on the calendar for next year will have to proceed without me. I have been so truly blessed by my time here at All Saints and hope that you will keep me in prayers.

It looks like we will move to Texas and try my hand at Public Schools there. The pay is much better and actually will afford my wife the respite of not having to make the kinds of sacrifices which we have been forced to with Catholic Education. I believe in Catholic Education with all my heart and can only hope that God will provide a way for me to return at some point in my life. It is with great sadness that I will not be returning.

We have another week of teaching, today is Fun Day. I hate that I will be leaving these kids and that I will no longer be contributing to their education and Faith. As I proceed, I put myself in God's Hands.

Meeting with the youth - Apostolic Visit to Brazil 2007

Sao Paulo, May 10, 2007 / 06:30 pm (CNA).- Addressing a cheering crown gathered at the old soccer Stadium of Pacaembu in Sao Paulo, Pope Benedict XVI challenged Brazilian and Latin American young people not to "spoil your youth" but to listen and follow God's call in their lives.
In a long and energetic speech addressed from the dove-shaped dome on a sunny afternoon, the Pontiff commented on the Gospel passage of the rich young man (Mt 19:16-22) and said, "While flying over the land of Brazil yesterday evening, I was already anticipating our encounter here in the Stadium of Pacaembu, anxious to extend to all of you a warm Brazilian embrace and to share with you the sentiments which I carry in the depths of my heart, and which are very appropriately indicated to us in today’s Gospel."
Recalling his predecessor, who visited Brazil in three occasions, Benedict said: "In 1991, during his visit to Mato Grosso, the Servant of God Pope John Paul II, of venerable memory, said that 'youth are the first protagonists of the third millennium … they are the ones who will be charged with the destiny of this new phase in human history.' Today, I feel moved to make the same observation regarding all of you."

Nearly 500 men to be ordained priests for U.S. Church this year

Washington DC, May 10, 2007 / 12:36 pm (CNA).- Nearly 500 men from Catholic dioceses across the country will be ordained for the priesthood this spring. This year’s cohort is representative of the Church in the United States, which is filled with well-educated professionals, newcomers to the nation and souls touched by war.
At least seven ordinands have a military background. Others immigrated to the United States, leaving situations of poverty and strife in their countries of origin. About one-third of the class is foreign-born, coming from countries as diverse as Poland, Vietnam and the Philippines.
About six percent of the Class of 2007 are converts to Catholicism. Douglas Freer, for example, who will be ordained for the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey, was an Episcopal priest for 12 years.

“We are an army opposed to abortion,” says president of El Salvador

San Salvador, May 2, 2007 / 11:55 am (CNA).-

The president of El Salvador, Elias Antonio Saca, said this week, “In El Salvador, we are an army of defenders of our Christian faith, we are an army opposed to abortion,” in commenting on the recent approval of a law that legalizes abortion in Mexico City.

“Those of us who love life, those of us who believe in God, those of us who believe in life cannot be in favor of abortion in any form,” the president said, adding, “I respect what has happened in Mexico, I am not going to meddle in the internal decisions of the Mexico City congress.”

“Thank God the constitution of our country and our leaders are opposed to abortion,” he went on, although there are some members of the government who “believe in these kinds of things, in this kind of dangerous modernisms.”

“All Christians must share the sentiment of the Holy See, whether we are Catholics or Evangelicals,” the Salvadoran president said in reference to the statement by the Secretary for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Angelo Amato, who called abortion and euthanasia expressions of “terrorism with a human face.”

He also stressed that abortion is “a crime, and the Vatican has gone even further and has called it terrorism, because it is the killing of a baby in the womb of its mother, it is true terrorism.”

Papal Prayer Intentions for May

VATICAN CITY, MAY 1, 2007 (Catholic Online) -
Benedict XVI will pray during May that Christians allow themselves to be guided by the Word of God. The Apostleship of Prayer announced the general intention chosen by the Pope: "That, following the example of the Virgin Mary, all Christians should allow themselves to be guided by the Word of God and always remain attentive to the signs of the Lord in his own life."

The Holy Father also chooses an apostolic intention for each month. In May, he will pray that "in mission territories there may be no lack of good and enlightened teachers in the major seminaries and in the institutes of consecrated life."
