SB 1742 - ProLife In Oklahoma
This is a critically important pro-life bill that contains the provisions of five abortion-related bills that passed the House earlier this session with overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill contains funding for alternatives to abortion, provides information about where a woman could get a free ultrasound, tells her about the pain a baby 20 weeks or older might feel during an abortion, provides for the consent of a parent before a minor's abortion, and makes it a crime to kill an unborn child in contexts other than legal abortion.
These five pro-life provisions were added to SB 1742 during the House consideration of the bill. SB 1742 then went back to the Senate, and the Senate voted to accept the House amendments. Since the bill passed the House and Senate with identical wording, the bill was sent to Governor Brad Henry on May 19. He now has the option of signing the bill into law, or vetoing the bill.
The most important thing that we as pro-life citizens in Oklahoma can now do is to contact Governor Brad Henry’s office ASAP, and politely ask him to sign the bill into law. The simple message to convey to the Governor is this, Please sign SB 1742, the pro-life bill, into law when it reaches your desk!
Governor's Oklahoma City Office phone: 405-521-2342 (calls are better than e-mails)
Governor's Tulsa office phone: 918-581-2801
Call Both!
To send e-mail, go to the website of the Governor: http://www.gov.ok.gov/contact.php Governor's FAX: 405-521-3353 (or 918-581-2835 in the Tulsa office).
Please pray that Governor Brad Henry will sign SB 1742 into law when it reaches his desk.
The pro-abortion forces in Oklahoma are expected to put an enormous amount of pressure on Governor Henry to veto the bill, so it is extremely important to contact the Governor ASAP in great numbers.
Thanks and God Bless!

Summer Approaches
Well, Fr. Matt celebrates 10 years as a priest on the 23rd. The parish celebrated with him today (Sun) and 'a good time was had by all.' His celebration is about Giving of himself in the service of Our Lord. I hope that I can live up to his example and place myself in HIS hands.
I told the kids at school, well, the 8th and 9th grades, that I am not coming back to ETS next year. I gave them the word that I am going to be at All Saints Catholic School in Broken Arrow. It was an offer I could not refuse and I am so very blessed to be going into Catholic Education next year. I believe in Catholic Education, I have dedicated my life to the service of Our Lord and His Holy Catholic Church and this is the place to be to do that.
Thank you all for the prayers that have been offered to help me get where I am today, Father, Grandfather, going into my 2nd year of teaching!

NEW JOB! All Saints Catholic School!
I will begin as the Spanish Teacher at All Saints Catholic School in Broken Arrow, OK next year. This represents a wonderful challenge for me and, in working at a Catholic school, is one of my dreams. I cannot begin to express the blessings that working and teaching at Evangelistic Temple School has been for me and, with sadness, I look forward to my last days there. The kids and my co-workers have been incredible.J.A. Arroyo

SUMNER RETURNS TO SGU AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Coach Sumner taught at St. Greg's when I went there from 1979 - 1981
SHAWNEE (May 5, 2006) - Long-time Shawnee resident and St.
Gregory's sports figure Don Sumner will return to SGU as its athletic
director, the university announced Friday. Sumner, who was an instructor
and coach at St. Gregory's for 35 years before retiring in 1997, fills
the spot vacated by Sharlyn Kennon, who resigned in October. SGU
volleyball coach Craig Case had been serving as interim athletic
director.
"St. Gregory's is my love. I spent a good part of my life there,"
said Sumner, who will also coach the men's and women's golf teams.
"Things are a little different with athletics since I was at St.
Gregory's, so I'll have to get my feet wet pretty quickly. But I can't
think of any better place to do that than St. Gregory's. It's definitely
the only place I would have considered taking a position like this."
Sumner's name has been synonymous with St. Gregory's athletics. He
took over a basketball program that was only three years old in 1961,
serving as head men's basketball coach and interim women's basketball
coach. In that span, Sumner compiled 621 wins, led the women's
basketball team to its first winning season, was named the Bi-State
Conference Coach of the Year five times and earned the Region II NJCAA
Coach of the Year Award. He was inducted into the St. Gregory's Sports
Hall of Fame in 1999.
Sumner also was an instructor of natural sciences during his
time at St. Gregory's, teaching biology, zoology and nutrition. He was
named St. Gregory's College Teacher of the Year in 1977. In 1997, he
served as alumni director and men's golf coach. He served as athletic
director from 1970 to 1996. Sumner has received two Benedictine Service
Medals for his contributions to St. Gregory's.
"I am very excited to have a long-time friend and colleague
returning to St. Gregory's," said Abbot Lawrence Stasyszen, SGU's
president. "During his time here, Don committed himself to his students'
success and to the mission of St. Gregory's. I think he brings with him
the affection and esteem of generations of St. Gregory's alumni."
An outstanding athlete in his own right, Sumner was named to the
Mid-State Conference All-Star Team at Shawnee High School in 1954. As an
Oklahoma Baptist University basketball player, he was named to the
Oklahoma Collegiate Conference All-Star Team in 1957 and 1958. He is
still the all-time record holder for free-throw shooting percentage at
OBU and was inducted into the OBU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
Sumner, a Shawnee resident for 67 years, serves on the
Pottawatomie Finance Authority and is a past board member of the Shawnee
Country Club. He owned a barbecue restaurant in Shawnee from 1998 to
2004.
Sumner received his bachelor's degree in science from OBU in 1958
and earned a master's degree in natural science from the University of
Oklahoma in 1966. He and his wife, Jenetta, have been married for 48
years. Sumner has two children and three grandchildren.

Papal preacher lambasts Dan Brown
Well, Easter Sunday has come and gone and now is the time for Easter Season in the Church. Easter season will go through Pentecost, when the Paraclete comes. For the Apostles in the upper room, these 40 days were probably the longest of their lives. More food for thought follows:
Gospel of Judas also dismissed as money-making venture
(ANSA) - Vatican City, April 14 - The pope's personal preacher railed on Friday against Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code and the recently published Gospel of Judas, saying they amounted to a fresh betrayal of Christ .
In a Good Friday homily in St Peter's Basilica, Capuchin father Raniero Cantalamessa told Benedict XVI and several top Vatican officials that the media was exploiting the Christian tradition to make millions of dollars .
"No one can stop this wave of speculation, which is in fact going to get stronger with the imminent release of a certain film," he said, in a clear allusion to the movie of the Da Vinci Code, which is due out next month .
Cantalamessa said there was a growing trend in the media to weave fanciful stories which played shamelessly with Christian beliefs and ancient legends. As well as making money for the publishers, these stories misled millions of people, he continued .
The Da Vinci Code portrays the Catholic Church as a corrupt organisation determined to hide certain explosive truths and contains the notion that Jesus Christ married and had descendants .
The Capuchin then directed his attention at the so-called Gospel of Judas which was published earlier this week amid intense media attention. The document, which dates back to the second or third century, offers a positive view of Judas, the betrayer of Christ .
The content of the document was branded heretical by the early fathers of the Christian Church and Pope Benedict himself strongly reaffirmed the traditional view of Judas on Thursday .
"There's a lot of talk about Judas's betrayal and nobody realises that it's happening all over again," said Father Cantalamessa. "Christ is still being sold, not to religious authorities for 30 pieces of silver, but to publishers and bookshops for billions". The preacher said the underlying problem was that the media was more interested in novelty than in truth .
He also said that such questions didn't deserve to be talked about on one of the most important days in the Christian calendar. "But we can't allow the silence of believers to pass for embarrassment and the good faith of millions of people to be manipulated by the media" .

Good Friday

Is 52:13—53:12
See, my servant shall prosper,
he shall be raised high and greatly exalted.
Even as many were amazed at him—
so marred was his look beyond human semblance
and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man—
so shall he startle many nations,
because of him kings shall stand speechless;
for those who have not been told shall see,
those who have not heard shall ponder it.
Who would believe what we have heard?
To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
He grew up like a sapling before him,
like a shoot from the parched earth;
there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him,
nor appearance that would attract us to him.
He was spurned and avoided by people,
a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity,
one of those from whom people hide their faces,
spurned, and we held him in no esteem.
Yet it was our infirmities that he bore,
our sufferings that he endured,
while we thought of him as stricken,
as one smitten by God and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our offenses,
crushed for our sins;
upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole,
by his stripes we were healed.
We had all gone astray like sheep,
each following his own way;
but the LORD laid upon him
the guilt of us all.
Though he was harshly treated, he submitted
and opened not his mouth;
like a lamb led to the slaughter
or a sheep before the shearers,
he was silent and opened not his mouth.
Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away,
and who would have thought any more of his destiny?
When he was cut off from the land of the living,
and smitten for the sin of his people,
a grave was assigned him among the wicked
and a burial place with evildoers,
though he had done no wrong
nor spoken any falsehood.
But the LORD was pleased
to crush him in infirmity.
If he gives his life as an offering for sin,
he shall see his descendants in a long life,
and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him.
Because of his affliction
he shall see the light in fullness of days;
through his suffering, my servant shall justify many,
and their guilt he shall bear.
Therefore I will give him his portion among the great,
and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty,
because he surrendered himself to death
and was counted among the wicked;
and he shall take away the sins of many,
and win pardon for their offenses.

Jesus Decoded - DaVinci Code Response
By Msgr. Francis J. Maniscalco
Causing people to see something they never saw before in a five-hundred-year-old work of art which is among the most famous and reproduced of all time is an accomplishment of genius, if that “something” is a valid new insight. If it is not, then this kind of achievement usually goes by other names.
The Da Vinci Code novel contains a claim that in Leonardo’s mural The Last Supper, which portrays Jesus and his twelve apostles at the meal he took with them on the night before he died, one of the twelve is not the apostle John but actually a woman who is Mary Magdalene.
Forget the Gospel narratives through which Leonardo, like every other Christian, would have known about the Last Supper and which contain no mention of Mary Magdalene; forget the fact that this mural seems to have caused no sensation among the monks whose refectory it decorated and who would have been as likely to recognize a female form then as we are today; forget the many paintings of the Last Supper which show a handsome youth often leaning on Christ’s shoulder or on his chest following the tradition that identified John with the unnamed “beloved disciple” of the fourth Gospel. If such a claim is put between the covers of a book, apparently it merits respectful consideration no matter how absurd.
What this novel does to Leonardo’s Last Supper, it does to Christianity as such. It asks people to consider equivalent to the mainstream Christian tradition quite a few odd claims. Some are merely distortions of hypotheses advanced by serious scholars who do serious research. Others, however, are inaccurate or false.
One false claim is that the Emperor Constantine, for political reasons of his own, decided to make a god out of Jesus Christ who was solely a Jewish rabbi for whom neither he nor his first followers ever asserted a divine origin. This claim cannot be sustained on the basis of the existing evidence which demonstrates that Constantine did no such thing.
It also highlights the schizophrenia in the The Da Vinci Code about Jesus Christ. Only if Jesus is divine would we have any interest in the possibility that his descendant might walk the earth today. If he is not, such a descendant ceases to be a mythic figure and becomes only a kind of celebrity child, so many of whom have turned out to be disappointments to their parents.
Reporters have asked whether even a bestselling novel can seriously damage a Church of one billion believers. No, in the long run, it cannot. But that is not the point. The pastoral concern of the Church is for each and every person. If only one person were to come away with a distorted impression of Jesus Christ or His Church, our concern is for that person as if he or she were the whole world.
Due to the concern about many current media portrayals of Jesus Christ and the origins of Christianity, this Web site was developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Department of Communications, under the direction of the USCCB Committee on Communications, chaired by the Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas, in consultation with the USCCB Secretariat for Doctrine.
Monsignor Francis J. Maniscalco is a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York who has served the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops since 1993, and since 1995 as Director of Communications

Speech Meet - Meets Star

Love that pun! Well, the speech meet at Evangelistic Temple School yesterday brought many parents to see how their darlings did at the ACSI Event. One of the attendees was the parent of a neighboring school, Garth Brooks. A great gentleman and a pleasure to meet, Mr. Brooks was there for this 9 year old daughter. She did very well, by the way!
Another tid bit, my ACSI Teacher Certification came in so I am an official, certified, teacher!

Christianity is a relationship, not an ideology, Pope says
Christianity is not an ideology, but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) told parishioners at a church in the eastern section of Rome on March 26.
On a pastoral visit to a parish in the Tor Tre Teste section, the Holy Father said that the 4th Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday, brings a joyful celebration not only because of the realization that Easter is drawing closer, but also because the day's Scripture readings remind Christians that "in spite of our unworthiness we are the recipients of God's infinite mercy."
Christ's death on the Cross, the Pope reminded his listeners, brings salvation from sin. "This is the Church's central message, unchanged over the centuries," he said. "It is the glory of the Cross that each Christian is called to understand, to live, and to bear witness to in his own life." In his lengthy homily, the Pope concentrated on the message of divine mercy, emphasizing that the parish is dedicated to God the Merciful Father. Pope Benedict read aloud a message that his predecessor, John Paul II, had been preparing to deliver on the feast of the Divine Mercy, which fell the day after his death.
The March 26 visit to Tor Tre Teste was the 3rd parish visit by Pope Benedict since his election last April 19. He spent the morning at the parish of God the Merciful Father, where he was greeted by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, his vicar for the Rome diocese, and Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the titular pastor. The Pope returned to the Vatican in time for his midday Angelus audience.
The Year Begins to Wind Down
Issues on the homefront are presenting challenges as we plan for the summer and beyond. Of course, since I am on the 10 month pay, I am working on getting the insurance taken care of for the upcoming year as well as summer. Michael is going to ETS next year too so that will be a challenge. All in all, the end of the year for Linda and I are just as challenging, if not more so, as for the students! God is with us and we are keeping chins up as we continue to strengthen our Faith.
The Vocations Cross at St. Catherine's is going very well. Our focus on vocations has been going a month.

The next week will show the remaining 11 episodes with the previous week's episode as the lead off.
Doctor Who was on in the United Kingdom from 1963 to 1989 with a Fox movie shown in the US in the late 1990's. The show gained cult status, playing on PBS stations in the United States until the early 1990's. After being cancelled by the BBC, the show continued to be popular around the world culminating in its wildly popular revival in 2005 with the 9th Doctor at the helm of the TARDIS.
The Time Lord enters a new age.
Christopher Eccleston's Doctor is wise, funny and brave, an adventurer in time and space. His detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world's in danger. But when it comes to human relationships, he can be found wanting. That's why he needs Rose.
Rose Tyler is a shop-girl from the present day, trapped in a dull existence. From the moment she and the Doctor meet, they are soulmates; they understand and complement each other. With nothing to hold Rose back — neither her over-bearing mum nor her hapless boyfriend — she chooses to devote herself to the Doctor and his promise of fantastic adventures across the universe. And he doesn't let her down….
At the 2005 National Television Awards, voted for by the British public, Doctor Who scooped three of the top prizes: Most Popular Drama, Most Popular Actor (Christopher Eccleston) and Most Popular Actress (Billie Piper).
So don't delay — hop into the Tardis and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime (or two or three or 12…)
