St. Gregory's Abbey Elects New Abbot!

On Friday, January 6, the Rt. Rev. Lawrence Stasyszen, O.S.B., was elected to serve as the tenth abbot of St. Gregory's Abbey.A native of Tecumseh, OK, and a 1984 graduate of St. Gregory's College, Abbot Lawrence entered the novitiate at St. Gregory's Abbey on July 10, 1984. He professed vows as a member of the community on July 11, 1985, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 10, 1994, the Feast of the Transfiguration.

Abbot Lawrence holds a bachelor's degree in English from St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH, and a doctoral degree (STD) in Theology with a specialization in Monastic Studies from the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anselm in Rome. He has served St. Gregory's Abbey in a variety of ways, including as the monastery Vocation Director and for ten years on the Abbot's Senior Council for several years. As chairman of the theology faculty at St. Gregory's University, Fr. Lawrence was instrumental in the design of the university's bachelors degree program in theology. As Vice President for Church Relations at St. Gregory's University, Fr. Lawrence forged strong collaborative relationships between St. Gregory's University and the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, and with the Dioceses of Tulsa, Little Rock and Amarillo. In May 2000, Abbot Lawrence was named as President of St. Gregory's University, which is owned and sponsored by the monks of St. Gregory's Abbey. In this position, Abbot Lawrence dedicated St. Gregory's University to the full implementation of the late Pope John Paul II's Constitution for Catholic Universities - Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Under his leadership, St. Gregory's University has experienced a period of strategic development and has received accreditation for its first graduate degree program. In his new role, Abbot Lawrence plans to continue to strengthen the mission of Catholic higher education and spiritual development through the witness and ministries of St. Gregory's Abbey.

Abbot Lawrence is a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and Rotary International. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Unity Health Center, the Board of Directors of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art and the Archdiocesan Commission for Justice and Human Development. He was invested as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2001.

Abbot Lawrence succeeds Abbot Martin Lugo, O.S.B., who served as the superior of St. Gregory's Abbey for nearly 11 years. Abbot Martin had served for two years as Prior Administrator, and then eight years as abbot following his election in 1996. At right, Abbot Martin extends the "sign of peace" to the newly-elected Abbot Lawrence in the church of St. Gregory's Abbey.

The community asks for the prayers of everyone, that we be guided in and strengthened in our monastic way of life.

Our happy home....

Well, it is not long before Landon will be a husband and Kayla will be a Morris. Tomorrow is the day. I hope that The Morris' family will be happy and prosperous in their new state of life.

Which brings me to the philosophical. One of the worst sins of today is "I Know". I just want to have a little say with this. "I Know" is where we shut ourselves off from the wisdom which preceeds us, stops us from listening to others, plugs our ears from the wisdom of God. I pray that our children will learn to say "tell me more so I can understand" rather than "I Know...."

Boston Legal - Anti Catholic episodes

Okay, were they just simply ignorant of Church Teaching or being malicious? I can't delve into the heart of the writer but the end result is still the same. In two separate episodes, one dealing with the Church and the Confessional, the other with the Church and teachings against abortion, the show attempts to make the Church seem unfeeling and silly.

Let's deal with the episode dealing with the Confessional. In the episode, two main characters have tracked down a pediphile to his Catholic parish and tries to get his address from the priest. The priest refuses to divulge this information until physically threatened (actually to the point of cutting off his fingers protecting the door to his office where he has kept notes from the confessional). This is not the whole story but we don't need to go into that.

1. Priests do not keep notes in the Confessional
2. The address of the pentitent is not part of the Confession and would not be considered protected by the "Seal"
3. A person confessing to something that they have no intention of stopping, ie a kidnapping in progress, would not be absolved and would not be protected by the Seal of the Confessional.

Next episode: A 17 yr old girl is raped and taken to "St. Mary's Catholic Hospital" in Boston. The doctors refuse to administer the, so-called, "Morning After" drug to abort the baby if she is pregnant. She and her mother are suing the hospital for refusing to administer 'contraceptive' and blame the hospital for her pregancy.

Church teaching is explicit, the "morning after" drug is not contraception, it is abortion. Also, the Church teaches that Artificial Contraception is a sin and therefore should Never administer such a drug within the premises of a Catholic Hospital. If such a family was so upset to sue the Catholic hospital, then why are they not pursuing abortion as an option? If they believe in Abortion in one instance, why not later in the pregnancy? I do not personally believe in Abortion but wonder why the silly issue being brought up with the show? It sounds hypocritical that, in one instance it is alright, in another is out of the question.
